Mystery Man

As many as six witnesses claim to have seen a man running east along the south side of Locust Street after the shooting, according to the defense case.

Dessie Hightower said in his police statement that he saw a black man "about 5' 9" or 6 feet" with dreadlocks run east on the south side of Locust. He said the person, who looked Jamaican and was wearing a black sweater, took off about 13 to 15 seconds after the shooting. The figure turned right at Camac Street.

Veronica Jones told police that after she saw the officer fall, two men jogged away from the scene.

When he testified for the first time in August, William Harmon said he saw someone he couldn't identify run east. So did Debbie Kordansky.

William Singletary, who also hadn't testified until August, said that Faulkner was shot by a man who was riding in the passenger seat of the VW with Billy Cook and then fled on foot before police arrived.

Before changing his testimony, cabdriver Robert Chobert told police, "I saw [a] black male start running [east] toward 12th Street. He didn't get far, maybe 30 or 35 steps and then he fell."
