Jan 20, 1982 | Mumia Abu-Jamal is arraigned before Judge Paul Ribner. |
June 1, 1982 | Pretrial motion is filed and jury selection begins under Judge Albert Sabo, who has presided over the case ever since. |
June 4, 1982 | Sabo denies all three of Abu-Jamal's pretrial motions. Abu-Jamal is acting in his own defense. |
July 2, 1982 | Abu-Jamal is convicted of murder in the first degree and possession of an instrument of crime. |
July 3, 1982 | Abu-Jamal's jury votes to impose the death penalty. Jamal files post-trial motions. |
May 23, 1983 | Abu-Jamal moves to vacate the conviction and sentence and is denied. Sabo formally imposes the death sentence. Jamal appeals. He is moved to death row at Huntingdon State Prison. |
March 6, 1989 | Pennsylvania Supreme Court affirms the conviction and death sentence. Four justices vote in favor. Two judges recuse themselves from the case for unknown reasons. |
Oct. 1, 1990 | Abu-Jamal is denied his application for review with the United States Supreme Court. |
Nov. 26, 1990 | Abu-Jamal is denied his application for a rehearing. |
June 10, 1991 | Abu-Jamal is denied his second application for a rehearing. |
January 1995 | Abu-Jamal is moved to the Greene State Prison, the most high-security prison in the state. |
June 1, 1995 | Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge signs warrant for Abu-Jamal's execution during the week of Aug. 13, 1995. Date is set for Aug. 17. |
June 5, 1995 | Abu-Jamal's attorney, Leonard Weinglass, files petition for post-conviction relief. |
June 9, 1995 | Pennsylvania State Corrections Department finds Abu-Jamal guilty of "engaging in the profession of journalism" and cuts off his telephone privileges by way of punishment. |
Aug. 7, 1995 | Judge Sabo grants an indefinite stay to review issues about the case raised by the defense in the petition and to decide whether or not to hold a new trial. If there is no new trial, the defense will pursue appeals in the federal courts. |
September 15, 1995 | Judge Sabo rejects Abu-Jamal's petition for a new trial. Defense attorneys are appealing the ruling to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and if necessary will appeal to the Federal Courts. |
