I had the address memorized--1444 Market Street--but, as it turns out, I didn't need to look on the building for the number. I knew where I was as soon as I saw the people on the sidewalk. There were grandmothers, leather boys and transvestites,
clean-cut goodie-two-shoes and several Stan and Jane Averageamericans;
some smoking cigarettes, others shading half-closed eyes from the
noonday sun; all clustered together, waiting to get into the San Francisco Cannabis Buyers' Club.
